Is my data delayed?
What the delayed, rate limited and paused banners and bucket labels mean, why traffic can take a few minutes to appear, and what to do about each.
New requests normally appear in ApiTraffic within seconds. When they don’t, the app tells you why, for the whole account and for each bucket. If you see none of the messages below, your traffic is being processed normally.
Where you see it
- A banner at the top of every page, only while something is not normal. It says what is happening and what to do next.
- A label next to the bucket name, in the bucket list and at the top of each bucket’s pages, for the buckets it affects. A bucket with nothing waiting shows no label, even when another bucket in the same account is delayed.
The status is refreshed about every 20 seconds while you use the app. If the app cannot get a current status, it shows nothing rather than guess.
Delayed
Your traffic is being processed with a delay (about 3 min). Nothing is lost; it will catch up.
Your requests have reached ApiTraffic and are waiting to be processed. Nothing needs doing: they are processed in order and appear as they are.
A delay is only shown when requests have waited more than a minute on two checks in a row, so a brief spike never flashes a banner. It goes away once processing has stayed caught up for about a minute.
Why it happens. Processing is shared fairly between accounts. When the platform is busy, higher plans are served first and get a larger share, but every account keeps moving, and one very busy account only delays its own traffic. A large burst from your own servers can also queue behind itself for a few minutes.
Rate limited
Your traffic is over your plan’s ingest rate limit. Only about 42% of recent records were recorded.
Your servers are sending more records per second than your plan records. Your API is not affected: every request is still served. ApiTraffic records a representative sample and counts the rest as not recorded.
What to do. If the extra traffic is expected, choose a higher plan from the banner’s See plan limits link. If it is not, look for a client or job sending more than usual. See Ingest rate limits and sampling for the limits per plan and how sampling works.
Paused
Capture is paused.
New traffic is not being recorded until something changes. The banner says which of these it is:
- This period’s included requests are used up on a plan that stops at its allowance. Recording resumes on the date shown, or straight away on a higher plan.
- The allowance is used up and overage is turned off. Turn overage on in billing to resume now, or wait for the date shown.
- There is no active subscription, for example after a trial ends. Choose a plan to resume.
What to do. Select Review billing on the banner. See Plan, usage and billing.
Still not seeing traffic?
If there is no banner and no label, your traffic is being processed normally, so the problem is between your app and ApiTraffic. See Troubleshooting.
